Seal of Biliteracy

The Missouri Seal of Biliteracy is an award granted by the Neosho School District to recognize students who achieve proficiency in English and one or more additional world languages before high school graduation. This achievement is documented on the student’s high school transcript and serves as a credential for employers, universities, and the community. 

 

 

Purpose of the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy

  • Encourage the study of a second language.
  • Recognize and celebrate student accomplishments.
  • Promote diversity and cultural understanding.
  • Provide employers with a way to identify bilingual candidates.
  • Offer universities a method to recognize and award credit to applicants.
  • Equip students with 21st-century skills for a global economy and society.
  • Strengthen community relationships and honor cultural and linguistic heritage.

Benefits of Earning the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy

Students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy will:

  • Receive certification of biliteracy that is recognized by employers, universities, and the community.

  • Be eligible for potential university incentives and credits.

  • Have the achievement officially documented on their high school transcript.

  • Receive special recognition at the high school graduation ceremony, including a certificate and a graduation cord.

Eligibility for the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to high school seniors who meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other world language. This proficiency can be achieved through traditional world language classes, community-based programs, heritage language learning, or other methods.

  • Exhibit sociocultural competency, highlighting their ability to navigate and contribute to a global society.

  • Complete any additional district or state requirements, as outlined in the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy Resource Guide.

Additional Information

The Missouri Seal of Biliteracy program, established in October 2017, has been endorsed by numerous Missouri businesses and higher education institutions. Participating schools must complete an initial application in the first year and a renewal application annually. Once approved, the state provides an electronic version of the Missouri Seal that can be used on diplomas, certificates, and other recognition materials.
